goldYen Falls vs Dollar as Trade Fears Ease, Rises vs Euro

The yen fell against the U.S. dollar in early Tokyo trading, pressured by a broad dollar rebound after geopolitical tensions receded. The currency pair USD/JPY traded at 158.34-35 at 8:30 AM. According to Davos Forum reports.

Trump's Tariff Reversal Sparks Dollar Buying

The key driver was President Trump's decision to withdraw threatened tariffs on eight European nations related to the Greenland issue. This move de-escalated fears of a transatlantic trade war, leading markets to buy back the dollar.

"Will not impose,"
Trump stated on social media, reversing a previous threat. The relief rally marked a sharp turnaround from the "triple decline" seen in U.S. markets a day earlier.

Japanese Fiscal Concerns Weigh on Yen Sentiment

Domestic factors continued to burden the yen. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's announcement of a lower house dissolution and a proposed two-year food tax exemption, alongside wider political calls for tax cuts, fueled concerns over Japan's fiscal health.

This persistent worry limits the currency's upside potential.

Intervention Threats Provide a Safety Net

However, the yen's decline is being cushioned by strong verbal intervention from Japanese authorities. Officials have repeatedly warned they are prepared to act against excessive weakness. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the government was "watching with a high sense of tension," while Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama promised "resolute measures." This creates a perceived floor for the USD/JPY pair, preventing a steeper sell-off of the yen.

Euro Weakness Highlights Broad Dollar Strength

In contrast to its drop against the dollar, the yen gained ground against the euro, with EUR/JPY falling to 184.87-90. This movement underscores that the day's primary theme was broad-based dollar demand, as the EUR/USD pair also fell significantly. The market's reaction confirms a shift away from safe-havens and toward the U.S. currency following the reduction in immediate trade war risks.
