Australian telecom giant Telstra announced on Thursday its collaboration with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring satellite connectivity technology to its regional customers.

Through a partnership with Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite-based internet provider, Telstra will introduce Starlink-to-Mobile technology in Australia. This will allow satellite broadband connectivity directly to compatible mobile phones, especially in remote areas.

"The collaboration will enable Telstra customers to send and receive SMS messages on compatible mobile phones in most parts of Australia with a clear line of sight to the sky," said Shailin Sehgal, Telstra’s Group Executive of Global Network and Technology.

This partnership builds on a prior agreement between Telstra and Starlink in 2023, which focused on delivering voice-only and voice-plus-broadband services to rural and remote Australian areas.

Notably, Tesla, the U.S. electric vehicle maker led by Musk, is chaired by Robyn Denholm, a former finance and operations executive at Telstra.
