E-commerce giant Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has developed a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of processing images and videos, in addition to text. This advancement reduces Amazon's dependence on AI startup Anthropic, The Information reported on Wednesday.

The new AI model, a large language model (LLM) codenamed Olympus, is designed to understand visual content, such as scenes in images and videos. This feature allows customers to search for specific moments, like a basketball shot, by simply using text prompts, according to sources familiar with the development.

The development of Olympus comes as Amazon seeks to decrease its reliance on Anthropic's popular Claude chatbot, available on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Amazon had recently invested an additional $4 billion in Anthropic, matching a similar investment made in September of the previous year to leverage generative AI technology.

It is expected that Amazon will announce Olympus as early as next week at its annual AWS re:Invent conference, according to a source familiar with the matter. Amazon did not provide a comment when approached by Reuters outside of business hours.

With the release of Olympus, Amazon aims to challenge the perception that its competitors, including Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), and OpenAI, have taken the lead in the generative AI space.
