Court advisor: Google's restrictions on access to Android Auto might violate EU regulations

On Thursday, an adviser to Europe's top court supported Italy's antitrust authority, suggesting that Google’s refusal to grant access to its Android Auto platform for an e-mobility app developed by Enel may violate competition laws.

Advocate General Laila Medina of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) stated that Google’s denial of third-party access to the Android Auto platform could potentially breach competition regulations.

In 2021, the Italian antitrust authority fined Google €102 million ($113.18 million) for promoting Google Maps while blocking Enel’s JuicePass app on Android Auto. This app allows drivers to use maps on their car dashboards and send messages while driving.

CJEU judges, who will issue a decision in the coming months, typically follow the majority of such advisory opinions.
