Australia, a key U.S. security ally, reiterated its strong support for Ukraine on Thursday, emphasizing that Russia is the aggressor in the ongoing war and that the conflict must be resolved on Ukraine's terms. Australia has committed A$1.5 billion in aid to Ukraine.

This statement came after U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial comments, where he labeled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy a "dictator" and suggested that Zelenskiy must act swiftly to secure peace or risk losing his country. Trump's remarks, which followed his claim that Ukraine was to blame for Russia's invasion in 2022, raised concerns among European allies about his approach to ending the war, which might inadvertently benefit Moscow.

Australia's Defence Minister, Richard Marles, underscored that, despite the tragic loss of life in the conflict, the war must be resolved in Ukraine's favor, as Russia is the aggressor. He emphasized that the integrity of the global rules-based order is at stake, and while Australia supports peace efforts, it must be on Ukraine's terms.

In response to Trump’s comments, Australia's opposition leader, Peter Dutton, also condemned the former U.S. president’s stance. Dutton, who was defence minister when the war began, firmly stated that Ukraine was not responsible for the war, adding that Australia should continue to stand proudly with Ukraine. He called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "murderous dictator" and emphasized that Australia should not give him any ground.
