Telefonica (NYSE:TEF) Germany and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are collaborating on a pilot project to explore the potential of quantum technologies within the telecom operator's mobile network, according to statements from executives of both companies.

The partnership aims to optimize the placement of mobile towers, enhance network security with quantum encryption, and leverage these insights to contribute to the development of 6G networks.

Major tech companies are working on developing quantum computers that harness the principles of quantum mechanics to deliver much higher speeds than traditional silicon-based systems.

While researchers remain divided on the timeline for the arrival of quantum computers, they are expected to be significantly more powerful and capable of breaking the encryption that secures modern communications.

Antia Lamas-Linares, Principal Applied Scientist at AWS, emphasized to Reuters, "Waiting until quantum computing is fully developed will be too late. It’s essential to start working with prototypes now."

Mallik Rao, Chief Technology & Information Officer at O2 Telefonica, which operates as Telefonica Germany, commented, "We are laying the groundwork today to take full advantage of quantum technologies in our network."

Earlier this year, Telefonica Germany revealed plans to transition one million of its 5G customers to the AWS cloud. "The performance has been excellent," Rao noted, adding, "We plan to migrate another million customers in the next six months, with a roadmap to move three to four million more within the next 12 to 18 months."
