On Tuesday evening, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump faced off in their first presidential debate, focusing initially on the state of the economy.

Harris criticized the Trump administration's economic policies, claiming they had harmed the economy and reiterated her commitment to a substantial tax cut for the middle class. She also argued that Trump's proposed increase in trade tariffs, particularly on China, would lead to higher inflation.

Trump defended his administration's economic record and advocated for higher trade tariffs, asserting that they would strengthen the economy and enhance the U.S.'s position internationally.

The debate, hosted by ABC News, marked the first public meeting between Harris and Trump. With less than two months until the election, recent polls show a tight race between the two candidates.

Throughout the debate, both candidates engaged in frequent personal attacks and deviated from the moderators' questions.

On abortion and reproductive rights, a crucial issue in the election, Harris vowed to reinstate protections under the Roe v. Wade ruling, with recent polls indicating voter support for Harris on this issue. Trump defended the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade but stated he would not implement a national abortion ban.

Trump criticized Harris, alleging that her tenure had led to an influx of illegal immigrants who were committing violent crimes, including unfounded claims of immigrants eating pets in Ohio.

Trump also reiterated his belief that he did not lose the 2020 election, while Harris accused him of undermining U.S. democracy.

In terms of foreign policy, Harris expressed support for Israel's right to self-defense but condemned the high number of Palestinian civilian casualties, advocating for a two-state solution and an end to the conflict. Trump contended that the Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine conflicts would not have occurred under his administration.
