In Germany, the services sector began the second quarter with a notable upturn, fueled by an increase in new orders, as indicated by a recent survey released on Monday.

The final services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) from HCOB rose to 53.2 in April, marking a significant jump from March's 50.1 and surpassing the critical 50.0 threshold, denoting expansion. This reading stands as the highest since June of the previous year.

Chief Economist Cyrus de la Rubia of Hamburg Commercial Bank commented, "The German service sector, which faced challenges at the beginning of the year, is now rebounding swiftly." Not only did activity grow at its fastest pace in ten months, but there were also improvements in new orders, outstanding business, and employment.

Simultaneously, the survey indicated persistent inflationary pressures, with both input costs and output prices rising faster than their historical averages. De la Rubia interpreted this pricing power as a positive sign for the overall health of the service sector.

The composite PMI index, which combines services and manufacturing data, climbed to 50.6 in April from March's 47.7, crossing the 50.0 threshold for the first time in ten months. However, this improvement was solely driven by the services sector, with manufacturing still experiencing significant decline, according to the report.
