On Tuesday, major European nations with coastlines on the North Sea came together to sign an agreement aimed at safeguarding underwater infrastructure, particularly in light of potential threats, including from Russia.

Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands joined forces by signing a joint declaration, enabling them to enhance information sharing in this regard.

The focus on protecting undersea cables and pipelines has intensified for Western European nations following the explosions on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in September 2022. These pipelines, crucial for transporting gas from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea, underscored the vulnerability of such infrastructure.

Concerns were further heightened after NATO warned in May 2023 about the possibility of Russia sabotaging undersea cables as a form of retribution against Western nations supporting Ukraine. Additionally, global security risks have escalated, especially after the Gaza war.

Andrew Bowie, the British minister responsible for nuclear and renewables, emphasized the significance of the North Sea in driving Europe's renewable energy and net-zero goals.

Protecting critical energy infrastructure, he noted, is essential for enhancing energy security on the continent. Bowie highlighted the importance of strengthening ties with neighboring northern European countries to ensure the resilience of infrastructure against potential threats or disruptions.
