Italy's antitrust authority has imposed a fine of 10 million euros ($10.70 million) on two Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) subsidiaries for alleged unfair commercial practices, announced on Wednesday.

The regulator alleges that Amazon has significantly constrained consumer choice by automatically pre-selecting the 'Subscribe&Save' option, which commits users to regular scheduled deliveries rather than one-time purchases, across a broad range of products.

The watchdog contends that this pre-selected recurring purchase option encourages consumers to buy products periodically, even when there isn't a genuine need, thereby limiting their freedom of choice.

Amazon has not yet responded to requests for comment.
