Intel appointed former board member Lip-Bu Tan as its new CEO on Wednesday, hoping to steer the company out of its challenging period. Tan, a respected figure in the semiconductor industry, will take over on March 18. A 65-year-old Malaysian-born executive, Tan studied physics at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and holds a master’s degree in nuclear engineering from MIT and an MBA from the University of San Francisco.
Tan has an extensive background in tech investment and leadership, having chaired Walden International, a venture capital firm, since 1984. He also led Cadence Design Systems, a key Intel supplier, from 2009 to 2021. In addition, Tan served on the boards of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and SoftBank Group. He joined Intel's board in 2022 to help restore the company’s position as a global chip leader and took on manufacturing oversight a year later. However, he resigned from the board last year after disagreements on the company’s turnaround strategy.
In a letter to employees, Tan emphasized that Intel would not pursue splitting its design and manufacturing operations. He expressed confidence that, with teamwork, Intel could regain its standing in the global tech ecosystem.
