Meta Platforms (META) is reportedly in talks to build a new data center campus for its AI initiatives, with costs potentially exceeding $200 billion, according to The Information on Tuesday, citing sources close to the matter.
Executives at Meta have informed data center developers about the possibility of constructing the campus in locations like Louisiana, Wyoming, or Texas, with senior leaders visiting potential sites earlier this month. The move follows a surge in AI investments since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, as companies across industries aim to integrate AI into their products and services.
Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
In January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed plans to spend up to $65 billion this year to expand the company’s AI infrastructure. By comparison, Microsoft plans to invest about $80 billion in fiscal 2025 for data centers, while Amazon has projected spending higher than $75 billion in 2024 for similar infrastructure projects.
