Japanese tech investor SoftBank Group and its majority-owned Arm Holdings are reportedly considering a potential deal involving Oracle-backed semiconductor company Ampere Computing, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Ampere has attracted interest from Arm while exploring strategic options, though discussions may not necessarily result in a deal, the source said. Representatives from Arm declined to comment, and Ampere and SoftBank did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Previously, Bloomberg News reported that Ampere, led by former Intel executives, engaged a financial adviser to evaluate acquisition interest.

Founded by Renee James, a former Intel president, Ampere produces central processing chips based on Arm technology. These chips are used by companies such as Oracle and Google, focusing on energy efficiency compared to offerings from industry giants Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.

Oracle has invested hundreds of millions of dollars into Ampere since its inception, as revealed in regulatory filings.
