AMD unveiled its latest AI PC and gaming chips at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, positioning itself to compete more aggressively with rivals Intel and Qualcomm in the growing AI PC market and in gaming hardware for desktops, laptops, and handheld systems. Among the new offerings are the Ryzen AI Max, Ryzen AI 300, and Ryzen AI 200 series processors, along with high-performance gaming chips for enthusiasts and content creators.
Advanced AI Performance
The Ryzen AI Max chips target high-powered laptops, designed for gamers and creators requiring top-tier performance. These processors boast up to 128GB of unified memory and a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS), a metric commonly used to measure AI performance. AMD plans to release a PRO series of the AI Max chips, offering enterprise-grade security and management features.
The Ryzen AI 300 and AI 300 Pro series cater to consumer and business users who need capable AI performance without the AI Max's premium power. These chips, including the Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340, also deliver 50 TOPS, enabling applications like Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC tools. However, the Ryzen AI 200 and AI 200 PRO series, designed for cost-conscious consumers and enterprises, offer 16 TOPS, limiting their ability to handle advanced AI applications.
Gaming-Focused Hardware
AMD also unveiled a new lineup of gaming-centric processors. For desktops and high-performance laptops, the company introduced the Ryzen 9950X3D, Ryzen 9900X3D, and Ryzen 9000HX series. The 9000HX chips are optimized for battery life with enhanced temperature control. For handheld gaming systems, AMD debuted its Ryzen Z2 series, which powers compact devices similar to the Nintendo Switch but capable of running PC games on Windows or Linux platforms.
Competing for Market Share
AMD’s advancements come at a pivotal moment as it seeks to expand its market share. Intel, under pressure to recover from a difficult year, is undergoing a leadership transition after a sharp decline in its stock. Qualcomm, although still a smaller player in the PC space, has made strides with competitive chips showcasing strong power and performance.
AMD’s robust portfolio and innovative developments have set the stage for a heated competition in the semiconductor market in 2025, particularly in AI PCs and gaming technology.
