A strike at Starbucks locations across the U.S. is set to expand to over 300 stores on Tuesday, with more than 5,000 employees expected to participate. The five-day work stoppage, scheduled to end on Christmas Eve, is being organized by Starbucks Workers United, the union representing employees at 525 stores nationwide.

The union reported that over 60 stores in 12 major cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Seattle, were already closed on Monday due to the strike. The labor action stems from a deadlock in negotiations over wages, staffing, and scheduling issues, leaving both sides unable to reach an agreement.

According to the union, the Christmas Eve strike will mark the largest labor action ever seen at Starbucks. Starbucks has yet to issue a statement in response to the strike, as per a Reuters request made outside regular business hours.

“These strikes are a demonstration of our collective strength, and we’re just getting started,” a barista from Oregon stated in a union press release. The Seattle-based coffee giant has previously expressed willingness to continue negotiations, accusing the union of prematurely ending prior bargaining sessions.

Earlier this month, Starbucks Workers United rejected an offer that included no immediate wage increases and a future guarantee of only a 1.5% pay raise. The union also criticized Starbucks for failing to propose a “serious economic plan” to address workers’ concerns.
