Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is planning a major expansion of its supercomputer, Colossus, in Memphis, Tennessee, with plans to scale up to at least one million graphics processing units (GPUs), according to the Greater Memphis Chamber. This expansion comes as xAI strives to compete with rivals like OpenAI.

Currently, Colossus operates with 100,000 GPUs to train xAI’s chatbot, Grok. As part of the expansion, Nvidia, which supplies the GPUs, along with Dell and Super Micro, which assemble the server racks, will set up operations in Memphis.

The Colossus supercomputer plays a crucial role in Musk’s AI ambitions, particularly as his rivalry with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, intensifies. Recently, Musk expanded his lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the organization and Microsoft of attempting to monopolize the AI market.

While the expansion marks a significant leap forward for xAI, it has raised environmental concerns. Activists and lawmakers have increasingly scrutinized the massive energy demands of data centers. In August, the Southern Environmental Law Center urged Tennessee officials to confirm whether xAI was using gas turbines to power its supercomputer without the necessary air permits.
