Amazon (AMZN) is upgrading its vast Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers to enhance efficiency, availability, and design.

The company aims to ensure that these massive computing facilities remain operational for its clients and provide the necessary processing power to support new generative AI applications. Prasad Kalyanaraman, AWS VP of infrastructure services, explained that significant improvements have been made in simplifying the electrical and mechanical designs, boosting availability for customers. Additionally, AWS has innovated in power delivery to servers, addressing the power demands of generative AI.

AWS is Amazon’s most profitable business segment, generating $90.7 billion in revenue in 2023, though this is less than the $484 billion from the retail division. However, AWS's operating income of $24.6 billion surpassed the $12.2 billion from Amazon's retail operations.
