President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday evening that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a newly-formed department dedicated to streamlining government operations and reducing bureaucratic hurdles.

Trump revealed that the two will head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), describing it as potentially “the Manhattan Project of our era.” According to a statement, the department’s objectives will include dismantling bureaucratic structures, cutting down on excessive regulations, eliminating wasteful spending, and reorganizing federal agencies.

The department is set to operate independently of the government but will collaborate closely with the White House to implement systemic reforms across federal institutions, promoting what Trump called “an entrepreneurial approach to governance.”

Increasing government efficiency was a key part of Trump's campaign promises, with pledges to eliminate what he views as redundant regulations and downsize certain agencies to reduce spending.

Trump noted that the DOGE will complete its mission by July 4, 2026.

Musk has recently become a vocal supporter of Trump, making appearances at campaign rallies, while Ramaswamy, who initially ran as a presidential candidate, dropped out of the race earlier in the year to endorse Trump.
