AMD is set to release its fiscal third-quarter earnings after the market closes on Tuesday, which will provide an insight into the current state of the artificial intelligence (AI) market. AI continues to be a significant driver for major tech companies, including AMD's competitor Nvidia and clients like Microsoft, leading investors and analysts to hope for positive returns on their investments.

This earnings announcement follows AMD's recent unveiling of three upcoming chips: the 5th Gen AMD EPYC central processing unit (CPU) for servers, the Instinct MI325X AI chip, and the Ryzen AI Pro 300 designed for AI-capable enterprise PCs.

Over the past year, AMD's shares have surged by 65%, outpacing the S&P 500's 36% increase and significantly outperforming Intel, which has seen a staggering 34% decline in its stock price. In contrast, Nvidia has experienced an impressive 246% rise in the same timeframe.

As the largest competitor to Nvidia in the AI chip market, AMD operates in a space where Nvidia holds a dominant market share, estimated between 75% and 90%.

Analysts predict that AMD will report adjusted earnings per share of $0.92 on revenues of $6.7 billion for the quarter, an increase from $0.70 per share and $5.8 billion in the same quarter last year.

The company's data center segment, which is its most critical area, is expected to generate $3.46 billion, up from $1.59 billion in Q3 2023. Analysts also anticipate $1.39 billion in revenue from AI and GPU sales alone.

AMD's second-largest segment, the Client business, which includes CPU sales for desktops and laptops, is projected to generate $1.71 billion, compared to $1.45 billion last year. However, the gaming segment is expected to see a significant decline, with analysts forecasting revenues of $572 million for the quarter, nearly a $1 billion drop from the same period last year.

This gaming segment encompasses sales of AMD’s Radeon graphics cards for laptops and desktops, as well as custom chips for gaming consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation. Sales of gaming graphics cards and consoles have declined since their peak during the pandemic, when consumers rushed to buy devices to occupy their time at home.

AMD's earnings report will also provide valuable insights for investors and analysts as they prepare for Nvidia's earnings announcement scheduled for November 20
